LOMPOC, Calif. - (02/14/05) -- CoastHills FCU is trying to make iteasier for U.S. servicemen in Iraq to call home to their lovedones. The credit union hopes to collect as many as 1,000 unusedcell phones that it will recycle for cash, then use the cash to buytelephone calling cards for America's fighting men and women inIraq. The credit union has set up drop boxes at all nine of itsarea branches for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. The programwas started by two Massachusetts school children who decided todonate their snack money after they hear about a soldier from anearby town who had run up a huge cell phone bill calling home fromIraq.
