SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A local man who changed values on Social Security checks and gambled away the almost $58,000 he cheated from banks and credit unions on Friday was convicted in federal court in Detroit of bank fraud and altering U.S. Treasury instruments.
Raymond Yono, 37, was accused of adding an “8” to Social Security disability checks for $305 between September 2005 and March 2006, transforming them to appear to be worth $8,305.
After depositing the checks in People’s Trust CU, Charter One Bank, Republic Bank and Citizens Bank, Yono withdrew some $57,707 from the banks before the alterations were discovered.
Yono had received Social Security disability payments since 1995 and Social Security survivor benefits since 2005, the government charged.
