ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A Virginia Beach woman who kited checks between seven local credit unions and two banks was sentenced yesterday to two years in prison and $42,000 in restitution.

Viketta Lynette Harden-Mitchell, 35, pleaded guilty to the check-kiting scheme by which she moved checks stolen from her boyfriend-then husband between the nine local institutions. They included: Navy FCU, Langley FCU, Naval Mid Atlantic FCU, NAE FCU, Fort Monroe CU and Chartway FCU, as well as Wachovia and WaMu banks.
Harden-Mitchell also admitted she got $24,000 in Hurricane Katrina disaster relief funds by claiming she was living in Mississippi at the time of the storm, even though she was living in Hampton, Va.
Her frauds totaled more than $42,000.
