SILVER CITY, Calif. – Thousands of motorists lined up at the pumps at a local Shell Station last Saturday to take advantage of $1.99 a gallon, courtesy of Chino FCU.
The promotion, with two women marching up and down the median strip holding signs and wearing black T-shirts announcing "Get Pumped! $1.99 gas Today Only," snarled traffic between and even contributed to a three-car accident on the other side of the road as motorists tried to jockey over to get to the cheap gas.
The average wait time to fuel up was approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
The credit union paid the station the difference between the promotion price and the price the station was asking for gas that day.
Credit union employees handled directing traffic at the station, while police officers were stationed at the stoplights at each intersection on either side of the station.
