CREDIT UNIONS IN THE MEDIA

The Alaska Journal of Commerce featured Alaska USA FCU in an article that said the credit union "holds a management philosophy that embodies the belief that employees are the financial institution's greatest assets." The article, noting AUSAFCU is marking its 60th birthday, provided a description of its Career Opportunity Program, which allows for every open position to be posted on its career center. "Most positions have career 'ladders' built in that allow for growth within a position and promotional increases," the story noted, adding details on Alaska USA's eco-sensitive efforts.

The Orlando Business Journal noted in a report that the 10 largest credit unions in Central Florida all posted lower surplusses during the third quarter compared with one year earlier, noting the economy is affecting bottom lines. The story included a quote from Richard Simonton, president of Insight Financial Credit Union, as saying, "Our primary losses have come from consumer loans, particularly auto loans. When the price of gas hit $4 a gallon, we saw people dropping off their car keys, saying they couldn't afford it any more. We never saw that before."

U.S. News & World Report published a Q&A with information on credit unions. In an article that asked, "With banks tightening lending standards and interest rates headed north, where do you turn?," it then answered, "For 90 million Americans, the answer is credit unions." Following a paragraph explaining how a credit union works, it then offered additional information on eligibility, where to turn for eligibility information (including CUNA), and historical credit union advantages.
