Credit Unions In The Media

Yakima Valley Credit Union was included in a report in the Yakima Herald on the booming local economy. That economic growth has meant a “ripe new market for new financial services,” the newspaper reported. Unemployment, at 6.8%, is at its lowest mark since 1990 in Yakima Valley, and agriculture remains strong. YVCU is making plans to open two more branches. CEO Earl Weatherman was quoted in the story.

NEWSDAY included comments from Patty O’Connell, VP-HR at People’s Alliance FCU, in a story on performance reviews. O’Connell said it was her experience after reading all the employee reviews before managers give them to their workers, that managers newest to the procedure often come up with the most detailed reports.

She theorized that the reason is the newest managers remember most clearly what it was like to be on the other side of the table and the kind of detail they wanted to hear.

In an editorial the Concord Monitor opined that New Hampshire’s credit unions are a better, viable alternatives for consumers to most payday loans. The editorial pointed to the high interest rates from payday lenders that can push borrowers into long-term and even permanent debt, and said credit unions are among those that have responded with affordable alternatives. The editorial added, however, that a sufficient number of alternatives have yet to develop. The editorial concluded by citing the New Hampshire league’s website as a resource for readers.
