AUGUSTA, Maine - A local relief worker yesterday began a cross-state walk that will stop at each of the state's 52 local food banks as part of the Maine CU League's annual Ending Hunger Walking Tour.
The credit union league has pledged $20,000 to the 700-mile walk, including $100 to each of the local food banks, $6,500 to the Good Shepherd Food Bank and $8,000 to Cross Roads Ministries, whose executive director Brenda Davis is embarking on the cross-state tour.
Davis joined credit union and state officials for a walk from Maine State CU to the capitol to kick off the event. The walk will return to the capitol on Nov. 15 with stops at Maine Education CU, the Alliance of Maine FCU, Capital Area FCU and Kennebec Valley FCU; then continue the following day to Gardiner FCU, Riverview FCU, Winthrop Area FCU and Monmouth FCU.
Davis will be walking an average of 25 miles a day from Matawaska to Kittery and is expected to complete her journey on Nov. 28.
