CU Cherry Blossom Run Raises Funds For CMN

The Children's Miracle Network, which benefits the nation's children's hospitals, won big last week during the third annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run through 10 miles of the nation's Capital. The run raised $425,000 for credit unions' pet charity (see related photos, page 6).

More than 10,000 runners, many of them prominent politicians or influential Capitol Hill staffers, coursed through the streets of Washington, D.C., bearing the credit union logo. Credit unions have helped raise more than $1 million for CMN during the three years of sponsorship. Among the main credit union sponsors were CUNA, NAFCU, CUNA Mutual Group, the CU Executives Society, the CO-OP Network, the D.C. CU League and the Virginia CU League.

"Everybody was pleased how it went this year. We had great participation from area credit unions and credit union volunteers," said Mark Wolff, chief spokesman for CUNA. This year's winners, Kenyan John Korir, and Romanian Nuta Olaru, each took home $6,000 prizes.

Credit unions raised more than $7 million for CMN last year and have raised more than $40 million since making CMN the main credit union charity over a decade ago.
