(06/03/02) - A 30 year-oldmember of Navy FCU pleaded guilty to federal charges of bank fraudlast week in connection with a scheme to kite almost $70,000 worthof worthless checks at the credit union. Tammy Baker, of Beaufort,S.C., admitted to depositing five worthless checks from her WellsFargo account into her Navy FCU account in August 2000, thenwithdrawing almost $10,000 of those funds before the checks hadcleared. A $60,000 check she deposited was put on hold by thecredit union. As a result of the kiting scheme, Navy FCU lost$9,791.
