WASHINGTON – Sunday’s annual CU Cherry Blossom 10-mile run through the nation’s capital raised $1 million for Children's Miracle Network, drawing a record number of runners to participate in the charitable race.
Sarah Turner, one of the CU organizers for the event, said donations are still being collected through the end of the month, so the fundraising numbers are only preliminary at this time.
But if the number of runners is any indication, the economy didn’t put a damper on the fundraiser, which raised $1,016,000 last year. Some reports put the number of runners in this year's event at just under 15,000, more than 6,000 of whom were credit union members.
Some 600 Volunteers from 50 credit unions and CU organizations were on hand to help with the race.
