Schuurmans, a former CUES staffer who led the association's executive education and training from 1997 to 2002, "helped build and grow a world-class learning environment for credit union executives" in collaboration with various prestigious institutions including The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University's Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management and the London Business School.

With more than 160 credit union executives per year attending programs Schuurmans helped build, "Frank's legacy is very much alive today," CUES CEO Chuck Fagan said in a press release Thursday.

Schuurmans was a graduate of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Fulbright Fellowship recipient who earned his doctorate in modern European history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a prolific author and credit union industry lecturer for nearly two decades. Schuurmans industry research was commissioned and published by several organizations, including the Filene Research Institute. As a lecturer, he was known internationally for his sharp wit and entertaining style.

Schuurmans continued to be engaged in the credit union industry at Decision Strategies International, where he served in various consulting roles for the past 12 years. He was known for making unconventional recommendations about how the industry could overcome its challenges.

"Frank was a leader and visionary," Fagan said.
