MADISON, Wis. CUNA Mutual Group and its employees’ union, the Office of Professional Employees International Union Local 39, were expected to extend their old contract a fourth time last night as the two sides still grapple over terms of a new multi-year contract.
“We’ve already had two extensions before, if we’re still talking, there should be another extension,” said Kathryn Bartlett-Mulvihill, president of the OPIEU Local 39, who declined to talk about specific proposals on the table.
But sources told Credit Union Journal that CUNA Mutual has moved from an original proposal of no raises over a three-year contract to one offering raises of 2%, 3% and 2%. The union’s latest offer is raises of 3%, 3.5% and 4%.
The two sides also are continuing to negotiate terms of retiree health benefits and the defined pension plan, according to sources.
The two sides met in negotiating sessions three times yesterday, but came to no agreements on the major issues, according to sources.
The three-year contract, which covers 700 of CUNA Mutual’s 1,750 employees in Madison, originally expired March 31, 2012, but was extended a year, then again through April 4, and yet again through yesterday.
OPEIU also represents office and clerical staff at CUNA and the World Council of CUs.
