CUNA Switches Positions As Chief Of Staff McBride Retires

WASHINGTON – CUNA said yesterday that Richard McBride, its chief of staff and longtime right-hand man for Dan Mica, is retiring at year end and will be replaced jointly by current chief lobbyist John Magill and chief league liaison Susan Newton.

Magill, a 30-year veteran of Capitol Hill before coming to CUNA in May 2006, will become Executive Vice President for Government Affairs and Special Assistant to the President and will continue to offer strategic counsel on legislative and political issues while overseeing the day to day operations of those key advocacy areas. He also will handle a number of administrative and other related matters inherent in the daily operations of the CUNA Washington office. Before joining CUNA, Magill worked as chief of staff for California Congressman Wally Herger, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Newton will become Executive Vice President of System Relations, and will continue to serve as head of league relations, state advocacy, and executive director of the American Association of CU Leagues. In her new role she will provide strategic counsel on credit union system issues and manage CUNA’s many external relationships. Newton came to CUNA from the Texas CU League in 1996 as senior vice president of league relations.

McBride is a lifelong friend of Mica and worked with Mica when Mica served in Congress. He came to CUNA with Mica in 1996 and will serve in a transitional role between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31.
