LYNCHBURG, Va. – Credit unions have managed to largely escape the impact of the unrelenting heat wave and strong storms that have led to widespread power outages in the East.
The Maryland & DC CU Association reported that it was not aware of any credit unions that were impacted by the weather that led to millions being without power for three days. In Virginia, the league reported a handful of credit unions have made some adjustments. Central Virginia FCU, Lynchburg, for instance, cut back its Timberlake branch hours, closing at 1 p.m. Nearby Beacon CU was limiting some types of transactions at one office.
“The good news is that we’ve had no reports, at present, of any significant damage to credit union facilities and branches,” said Lewis Wood, VP of public relations and communications for the league. “We did get a report from DuPont Community Credit Union [Waynesboro], saying they’re having some minor network connectivity and phone issues.”
In Colorado, meanwhile, CUs are working to assist members and others affected by the dozen-plus wildfires in the state. The National Credit Union Foundation and the Mountain West CU Association are collecting donations to provide assistance to CU employees, members and families who are affected by the fire. Boulder Valley CU, Boulder, Colo., has donated $2,500 to the NCUF’s CUAid disaster relief system.
