MIAMI-Credit Union Journal readers likely didn't win big on their preseason Super Bowl bets.
Prior to the beginning of the 2009 National Football League season, a poll on cujournal.com asked readers to cast their votes on which NFL division would produce the season's champion. The NFC South produced the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, although just 6% of voters predicted it would do so. Similarly, the Saints opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, came out of the AFC South, which just 3% of readers had predicted would produce a Super Bowl team.
Meanwhile, as the result of the game, the Indiana Credit Union League had to make a $100 donation to the National Credit Union Foundation in the name of the Louisiana Credit Union League, as a result of a pregame bet the two teams had made. The funds will go towards efforts to help victims of the massive earthquake in Haiti that has already claimed 230,000 lives.
In New Orleans, meanwhile, some credit unions shut down operations on the day after the Saints win.
