The Defense Credit Union Council on Wednesday said Anthony “Tony” Hernandez will become the president and CEO of the DCUC on Aug. 1, following the planned retirement of Roland “Arty” Arteaga.
Arteaga has served as president and CEO of the DCUC since March 1, 2000. In December 2016 he announced his plans to retire.
Hernandez joined the DCUC as its chief operating officer on Aug., 9, 2016. Denise Floyd, the Council’s board chair, said Hernandez has been responsible for DCUC's overall operational effectiveness and for enhancing DCUC's advocacy role as the principal trade association exclusively supporting the interests of credit unions operating on Department of Defense installations worldwide.
Hernandez also works closely with the Department of Defense on matters affecting defense credit unions and the financial quality of life of DoD personnel. Since his arrival at DCUC, Hernandez has been credited with successfully fielding a guide on the new DoD Blended Retirement System, working with member credit unions on Military Lending Act rules, offering comments on the Department's personal commercial solicitation policy, bolstering the Council’s emphasis on financial education, and spearheading the Council’s 5-year strategic plan.
Prior to joining the DCUC, Hernandez served in the United States Air Force in various senior leadership and command positions, both as a Mission Support Group Commander and as the chief financial officer of an Air Force Major Command as a full colonel. Key among his assignments were his tour of duty at the Pentagon and two tours as a Squadron Commander for the 8th and 62nd Comptroller Squadrons. Colonel Hernandez also served as the Executive Officer to the Commander of Air Combat Command, where he directly supported the 4-Star commander of 145,000 Airmen.
On Oct., 1 2016, Colonel Hernandez officially retired from the United States Air Force after 25 years, closing his career as the Commander 319th Mission Support Group at Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota. Hernandez has a Bachelor of Business Administration from New Mexico State University, a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix, a Master of Military Operational Art and Science from the Air Command and Staff College, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the Air War College.
Hernandez and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Virginia.
