RIVERWOODS, Ill. – Cards company Discover Financial Services yesterday said second quarter earnings rose 12% to $234 million, or 48 cents a share.
Second quarter results were aided by the sale of the company’s Goldfish British cards operation, which added six cents a share to earnings.
Discover’s third-party payments system includes Pulse EFT – Discover’s ATM, debit and electronic funds transfer network – and banks and other institutions that issue cards through Discover’s network. That segment produced transaction volume of $29.4 billion, up 33% from a year ago. The company attributed the jump to the new issuers that it signed last year, and rising volumes from its existing issuers.
