Don't Underestimate 'Hassle Factor'

DEL AIRE, Calif. — Neil Goldman, CEO of Goldman Consulting & Strategy and a contributor to Credit Union Journal, suggested that there will still be a "tremendous migration" away from the big banks because the trust factor has been broken.

But, he added, "as much as people say they want to leave, the hassle factor will prevent them" from doing so, even if the perceived hassle of switching is greater than the actual hassle.

As such, credit unions still have a tremendous opportunity if they approach these would-be members in the right way. "Build it and they will come never worked," Goldman said. "What I have seen work is to do it for them, help them do it and be an assistant in their transfer. It's one thing to say we're available to you; it's another thing to say 'Come on over, we'll do it for you.'"
