Elderly Member Puts CU Accounts In Order Before Police Station Suicide

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A 69-year-old member of San Diego Metropolitan CU went to the credit union to put his accounts in order Friday morning, then crossed the street to the police station where he shot and killed himself Friday morning in front of horrified onlookers and a police dispatcher.

Shortly before the shooting, the member had gone into the credit union at 9:25 a.m. and told a clerk he wanted to put his affairs in order, according to police.

He told the teller, who knew him as a regular member, that he was going to end his life and he showed her a gun, police said. But then he left and went across the street to the police station, where he laid down on the pavement and shot himself.

Several people, including two credit union tellers and the dispatcher, who was stopped at the gate in her car, witnessed the event.

The member died at the scene and had a suicide note in his left hand, said police.

A statement issued by the credit union said the man, a longtime member, had talked to employees Friday about health issues, and they tried to convince him to seek help and counseling.
