ROCHESTER, N.Y. -
The $2.7-billion credit union plans to build a six-story office building opposite the String Museum and adjacent to the Washington Square parking garage where it will house 300 employees and a new branch. The project is expected to be completed by the spring of 2010.
The credit union will get tax incentives from Monroe County’s industrial development agency and discounted electrical power from Rochester Gas and Electric, as part of the $50-million project.
ESL is the second major employer to announce plans for downtown, joining local telecommunications provider PAETEC, which will build its worldwide headquarters here.
ESL was chartered in 1920 as Eastman Savings and Loan Association by George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak Company. In 1996 it became one of the few S&Ls to convert to a credit union, growing since then into the largest credit union in New York.
