SAN ANTONIO - Frost National Bank SVP Patti Bliss is leading an effort to provide teller help to deaf customers by deploying video conference technology.

The mother of a 20-year-old deaf man, Bliss said she wants to help hearing- impaired people live more independent lives, which also includes using financial institutions.

Four local Frost National branches will feature a separate room where a banker, interpreter and the customer can all communicate. Bliss said that many deaf people can only converse in American Sign Language, a universally accepted standard with no roots in the English language, so tellers passing notes back and forth frequently can't help or serve impaired consumers.
