Female trio promoted to top jobs at Michigan credit union

Wayne-Westland Federal Credit Union in Westland, Mich. has made a slew of appointments to the C-suite, including a new chief executive officer, new chief operating officer and new chief financial officer.

Perhaps most notably, all three are women and each one started as a teller.

At the top of the organization, Joleen Bowman has been promoted to CEO, effective July 1, succeeding longtime president and CEO Thelma Dasho, who will retire at the end of June. Bowman has been with the credit union for 13 years and worked her way up through the organization.

Tracy Whittaker has been promoted from compliance manager to COO. She has been with the credit union for 33 years, also serving in loan supervisory and branch management roles.

Lastly, Becky Schoonover has been promoted from accounting supervisor to CFO after 12 years in the accounting department and a total of 22 at WWFCU.

“It isn't the norm to find so many qualified applicants to promote from within one credit union with only 36 employees,” Dasho said in a press release. “I work with outstanding and very qualified staff, and these three ladies rank high on the list of qualified applicants. I know they will achieve the objectives for the credit union and its members. My sincere congratulations to all three of them.”

As reported, it’s not unusual for women to land in C-suite roles at credit unions, however it is far more common at small and mid-size institutions. Maine’s University Credit Union and America’s Christian CU in Glendora, Calif. Also both recently announced new female chief executives.

Wayne-Westland FCU posted more than $550,000 in net income during the first three quarters of 2019, the most recent data available, up from about $502,000 during the same period the year before.
