SAN FRANCISCO - A consortium of technology and wireless communications companies and banks announced they have successfully field-tested mobile transactions technology that incorporates biometric fingerprint technology for authentication.
The new system, dubbed WirelessWallet, was shown for the first time Monday at the annual Smart Phone Summit Conference. The WirelessWallet uses Kyocera handsets equipped with biometric identification technology to access payment cards.
A three-month pilot of the system was conducted by wireless communications provider Cellular South in Jackson, Miss., and Memphis, Tenn., in partnership with Bank of America, ViVOtech and Mpact, Inc.
The mobile transactions were conducted for MasterCard's PayPass cards and authenticated using fingerprint technology provided by Atrua Technologies. Cellular South plans to roll out WirelessWallet in early 2008.
