DENVER – First Data Corp. is eliminating about 400 highly paid software programming jobs at its Omaha-based First Data Merchant Services and plans to outsource those jobs, probably to Argentina and Brazil.
Employees at the plant said they were told that 80% of the people in production programming stood to lose their jobs, which the workers said would be about 400. The first may be gone by the end of July; all probably will lose their jobs by the end of 2008.
The transaction processing giant, which was acquired last year in a huge buyout by private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., has been trimming jobs at several other operations in recent months by phasing down or closing call centers in Tulsa, Okla., and Daytona Beach, Fla., and cut a total of 1,600 jobs last November.
