Flynn Recognized For 5 Decades Of Volunteerism

John Flynn, treasurer of Denver-based Colorado United CU and who helped charter the credit union in 1952, was named Director of the Year last week by the National Center for CUs and the 1,400 attendees at its annual convention here. Flynn, who has served all five decades on the board of the credit union, saw the credit union, formerly known as School District 50 CU, grow from a small office in the school administration offices to one with four branches, 14,000 members and $75-million in assets.

Named as runners up for Director of the Year were: Joseph Taylor, chairman of the board of Northern Star CU, Portsmouth, Va., a director for 29 years who helped guide the credit union through retirement of its longtime CEO, conversion from a single sponsor as The Navy Yard CU to a community charter and name change; and Terry Witzke, chair of Advantage CU, La Crosse, Wis., who served as stand-in CEO after firing the manager of the $200-million CU.
