SAN DIEGO - (10/04/04) -- Mission FCU pulled its $10,000contribution to the Cal State San Marcos intercultural speakerseries because the funds were to have gone to hiring filmmakerMichael Moore, producer of the anti-Bush film 'Fahrenheit 911'. Thecredit union asked the university to return the funds after anumber of credit union members voiced their displeasure with thesponsorship of the outspoken critic of the Bush administration. Ina message on its web site the credit union said the recent 'mediaexcitement' about Michael Moore has led credit union members to askhow Mission Federal financially supports education in San Diego."Our efforts stand up to the most stringent of scrutiny, typicallywithout the controversy and polarization of the Michael Moorespeaking event." The message said the credit union's charter andnonprofit structure prohibit the credit union from supporting anypolitical campaigns.
