Former CFCU Community Credit Union CEO dead at 69

Robert O. Witty, the former CEO of CFCU Community Credit Union of Ithaca, N.Y., died on Friday, May 11, at the age of 69, in Philadelphia.

According to an obituary published by Perkins Funeral Home of Dryden, N.Y., Witty began his career at CFCU in 1969 as an assistant manager and worked his way up to the top job in 1984.

On CFCU’s Facebook page, the credit union noted that “the entire CFCU family is saddened by this loss yet shares a sense of pride of his many contributions to CFCU and the credit union industry.”

“Bob’s leadership set the foundation for the successful, community oriented financial institution that exists today,” said current CFCU President and CEO Lisa Whitaker.

When Witty joined the credit union, it had one office, six employees about 2,000 members and $3 million in assets. At the time of his retirement in 2010 the credit union had nine locations, more than 60,000 members and $600 million in assets. (The credit union now has assets in excess of $1 billion.)

Witty earned his Certified Credit Union Executive designation and in June 2010 he was inducted into the New York Credit Union Hall of Fame.
