WASHINGTON – Freddie Mac, run under conservatorship by the government since last September, announced yesterday it has hired Charles Haldeman Jr., a former chief executive at mutual fund giant Putnam Investments, as its new CEO.
Haldeman replaces John Koskinen, who has been serving as Freddie Mac's interim CEO since the March resignation of David Moffett.
The hiring comes at a time when the future of Freddie and its sister Fannie Mae, also being run under conservatorship, are in question, as the two have wracked up billions of dollars in losses and tapped into more than $85 billion of government aid since last year’s takeover.
