Group Tours SACU's Affordable Home Area

San Antonio Federal Credit Union (SACU) hosted representatives from Caja Popular Mexicana (CPM), the Mexican Credit Union; the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), and the Texas Credit Union League (TCUL) as part of an effort to expand credit union services to the Hispanic community.

Alfonso Garcia Moreno, director of Corporate Services from CPM, and Victor Corro, program specialist for WOCCU, joined Sally Dollar, communication specialist from TCUL, during the TCUL Marketing Conference. The representatives toured SACU's corporate offices and visited SACU's People Helping People Affordable Housing program at Resurrection Subdivision in West San Antonio. They talked with one of the homeowners and visited her home, which was built through the program.

The credit union, through a partnership with the San Antonio Alternative Housing Corporation, assists underserved members of the community who desire to finance and own their own homes.

"Both Alfonso and I witnessed how the spirit and the social side of a financial institution could improve someone's life...by providing shelter," Corro said. "It was palpable the pride that the lady had in showing off her house to us; a year ago, owning a house was not even close to being a dream for her."

SACU has helped provide more than 200 homes with a value of $8.8 million during the past seven years. Annette Anderson, resident, said, "This program has been a great help, because I wouldn't have been able to own my own home without it."
