FIFE, Wash. – An employee of Harborstone CU was arrested last week after authorities learned he was paying tens of thousands of dollars of personal expenses with money stolen from the credit union with fictitious identities.
Police said Steven McGee created birth certificates, driver's licenses, medical records, marriage licenses, loan documents and Social Security cards – all of them making up the paper trail of someone's life. He allegedly used those new identities to live a normal life, taking out loans, credit cards, checking accounts, running up bills and the walking away from them.
McGee allegedly created the identities from birth to adulthood and used forged paperwork to make them appear completely official. Detectives found folders in McGee’s home each labeled with a different identity. There was also a box of rubber stamps and seal embossers including one from the Canadian consul.
Detectives found counterfeit birth certificates and birth certificate blanks. They also discovered a file labeled "potential use" which contained alleged IDs McGee hadn't utilized yet.
Police said they found a trail of false identities McGee had created stretching across the country: in Washington, Virginia, Vermont, New Jersey, Idaho, Ohio and Texas.
