Heritage Trust Makes First Hire Under Youth Apprenticeship Program

Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union in North Charleston, S.C. said it continues to expand on its commitment to workforce readiness by participating in the Youth Apprenticeship Program.

The $511 million CU said the program is a partnership between the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Trident Technical College and area school districts. Through this initiative, local high school juniors and seniors are able to gain additional knowledge beyond their coursework by taking dual credit classes at Trident Technical College in a specific vocation.

The Youth Apprenticeship Program also provides students with the opportunity to apprentice for 10 hours a week at a company in their respective course track to gain valuable experience in a special career field.

Members of the credit union were in attendance at a recent signing ceremony to support newly hired student-apprentice Bryson McIntosh, a junior at Berkeley Middle College who will be working alongside members of the Heritage Trust Information Technology department as a network technician.

Through this program, Heritage Trust said McIntosh will be able to build upon what he learns in the classroom by getting on-the-job training with network security, data center operations and managing help desk service requests.

"We are excited to deepen our involvement in this initiative by participating in the apprenticeship program," Dustin Haynes, Heritage Trust FCU's public relations officer, said in a statement. "Heritage Trust has always been committed to combining financial literacy and education to empower our youth and give them the tools to help them be successful. Not only is this a great resume builder for someone in high school, it is a great way for students to learn another aspect of the credit union."

Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union has been a part of the greater Charleston area since 1955. It serves approximately 43,000 members via 12 branch locations. It has more than 300 Select Employer Groups throughout Charleston, Dorchester, Colleton and Berkeley counties.
