* Install a firewall. Most operating systems come with firewalls and they are easy to turn on and configure. Firewalls can get in the way of some Internet games but they shouldn't interfere with the operation of Internet banking applications.
* Install anti-virus software. Many consumers fail to realize that the free anti-virus software on their computer expires within 90 days of purchase. And a July 2006 survey conducted by Harris Interactive found that while 88% of U.S. adult computer users have anti-virus installed on their computer, 65% of them postponed updating antivirus programs.
* Install anti-spy ware software. An anti-virus software package doesn't necessarily include protection from spy ware. The threats to the system are different as are the solutions.
* Turn on automatic updates on your computer. Vendors regularly post updates to correct the security deficiencies of their products. Most operating systems can be configured to automatically update themselves with patches when they are made available. Turn the feature on and keep it on.
* Be careful where you surf. Hackers have developed the capability to infect computers just by visiting their hostile website.
* Keep your passwords confidential. Avoid sharing passwords with others or posting them where others can see them.
* Avoid interacting with spam. Clicking on unknown links or opening attachments can infect your computer and should be avoided. Don't forget to delete spam.
