ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A former branch manager for Huron River Area CU was sentenced to eight months behind bars and ordered to pay restitution for stealing almost $205,000 from the troubled credit union.
Thirty-one-year-old Jason Dodge pleaded no contest to charges of embezzlement and identity theft in state court. Prosecutors said Dodge embezzled more than $100,000 from the credit union and then tried to cover it up by using members’ names on fake loans.
The scheme came to light in February when NCUA put the credit union in conservatorship for making questionable loans in two south Florida real estate developments. Although that issue was unrelated to the embezzlement, an audit of the credit union’s books highlighted the problem.
Dodge already has repaid $40,000.
