GALVESTON, Texas – The National CU Foundation said yesterday that credit unions had raised almost $270,000 so far to help employees affected by Hurricane Ike.
The Texas CU Foundation has raised $168,000 and the National CU Foundation more than $100,000 through CUAid.coop and additional pledges, and more contributions are welcome.
The largest pledge is from the Mississippi CU System which has pledged to wire $33,000 to National Foundation.
The Foundation emphasized that credit union employees have tremendous ongoing needs and has been making hundreds of $500 emergency grants almost as quickly as applications are coming in. However, now that more residents are finally being allowed to look and leave their properties and see the damage for themselves, it's clear that many more credit union employees have lost everything they own. These employees will have much greater needs because insurance and Federal Emergency Management Agency cannot make them whole.
