Illinois credit unions set for new state regulator

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker this week named Deborah Hagan as secretary of the state’s Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Part of Hagan’s duties will include overseeing state-chartered credit unions.

According to a press release from the Illinois Credit Union League, Hagan has spent more than three decades advocating for consumer rights in Illinois, including having led the Consumer Protection Division of the Illinois Attorney General’s office. League representatives said they have “worked very closely” with Hagan during that time.

“Debbie has always brought insight and a willingness to listen and reach a reasonable resolution in relation to any issue we have addressed,” Stephen Olson, ICUL’s former general counsel, said in a statement. “Her experience, judgment and perspective will help credit unions fulfill their mission of serving their members. She understands and respects the unique structure of credit unions.”

According to a release from Illinois Public Health Association, Hagan earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Dayton School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts in political science from Miami University.

Her nomination is subject to confirmation by the Illinois Senate.
