ING Buys ShareBuilder for $220 Million

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Dutch banking giant ING announced yesterday it has agreed to acquire online brokerage ShareBuilder for $220 million.

The company’s ING Direct USA unit will absorb 661,000 of ShareBuilder's customers as of Sept. 30. ShareBuilder, which is popular with credit unions, allows consumers to buy fractional shares of stock through automatic payroll deduction.

Among the entities marketing ShareBuilder are Boeing Employees CU, Wal-Mart stores, Costco, and Compass Bank.
