Leading NCUA Candidate Withdraws

WASHINGTON - Gilbert Gonzalez has apparently withdrawn his name for consideration for the National Credit Union Administration board, initiating anew the search for a successor to Chairman Dennis Dollar.

Mr. Dollar said that Mr. Gonzalez and the White House apprised him of the withdrawal. He said he has agreed to continue in his position into 2004, as he has been doing since his six-year term expired last April.

Mr. Gonzalez, an under secretary at the Department of Agriculture, was the front-runner to succeed Mr. Dollar on the three-member NCUA board but was never formally nominated. Mr. Gonzalez did not return phone calls seeking comment. But Mr. Dollar said Mr. Gonzalez told him he was involved in several major projects at the Agriculture Department and wanted to see them completed. There is no word on who the next candidate will be.
