JACKSON, Miss. - (09/12/05) Both the Mississippi andLouisiana credit union leagues are urging would-be credit unionvolunteers seeking to help out the storm-torn Gulf Coast to holdoff on traveling to the area to offer their services to creditunions in need. Both leagues expect credit unions in their stateswill have need of volunteers to help fill in for tellers, loanofficers, managers and others who may have lost their own homes inthe storm and may need time off to put their own lives backtogether before being able to concentrate on serving members, butuntil the credit unions and the leagues can assess what is neededand how to ensure volunteers have a place to stay when they getthere, Good Samaritans should wait before picking their away acrossthe Gulf Coast to help. Instead, the leagues have been providedwith a list of potential volunteers culled from responses to TheCredit Union Journal's appeal for such volunteers and will becontacting them as soon as the needs have been assessed. Creditunionists interested in being added to this list should contactFrank Diekmann at fdiekmann@cujournal.com.
