AUGUSTA, Me. – The Maine CU League joined several other groups this afternoon in endorsing Angus King, the two-time former governor who is running as an independent for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Olympia Snow.
“We’ve had a long-standing relationship with Governor King and he has always fair on our issues,” John Murphy, president of the league, told the Credit Union Journal this afternoon.
The Maine race is one of a handful that could tip the balance of power in the Senate. King , who is far head of both his Republican and Democratic candidate in the polls, has not indicated which party he will caucus with, but Republicans are expecting him to caucus with the Democrats and are running a multi-million dollar advertising campaign against him.
King held a news conference this afternoon to announce endorsements from the Maine credit unions, as well as the New England Regional Council of Carpenters, Professional Firefighters of Maine and American Nurse Association — Maine.
Yesterday, the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of King.
