Maine CUs Work To Plug Data Breach

LEWISTON, Maine – As many as 1,000 credit union members around Maine are believed to have had their card accounts compromised and are now reporting unauthorized transactions on their accounts.

The unauthorized transactions are appearing on accounts of members who shopped at one of six Day’s Jewelers stores in November or December, according to the Maine CU League. Day’s Jewelers has stores in Auburn, Bangor, Brunswick, South Portland and Waterville, Maine, and one in Manchester, N.H.

The breach is affecting credit and debit cards.

“Cards are being reissued to those members affected and our credit unions are working to insure that the inconvenience to members is minimal,” the Maine CU League said.

Local banks throughout the area also were affected. They began issuing phone and mail alerts to their affected customers late last week.

The theft was noticed when a rash of international transactions set off warnings with local credit unions and banks.
