Mychal Barber, a Salt Lake County Sherriff’s Deputy up until a year ago, was on his way to the gym, but stopped at his credit union on the way. Seconds before, a man had handed the tellers a note demanding cash - and left through the back door.

Barber, who had his 14-year-old son in the car, grabbed his gun and got out of the car so as not to endanger the youngster, and chased down the suspect, before wrestling him to the ground, where he held him until police arrived.

He held his pistol against the suspect’s spine until Sandy police arrived.
