SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – A Peoples CU member was charged with larceny after allegedly stealing $10,000 from another member at the credit union’s ATM last Saturday.
John Coutu, 21, took an envelope containing the money from the victim's back pocket and fled, according to police. The victim chased Coutu until the victim fell over a guard rail.
Coutu dropped or threw away the envelope, allowing police to recover the money. They said they arrested Coutu a short time later at his home.
Credit union employees helped them identify Coutu, who they said made a credit union transaction before allegedly stealing the $10,000 from the victim at the ATM.
Police said the victim suffered injuries while pursuing the suspect, but was treated and released.
