Member Seeks To Raise 100 Million Pennies For Charity

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – “...A guy comes into the credit union pushing a wheelbarrow full of 56,600 pennies.”

No joke. The deposit at North Coast CU – $566 worth weighing almost 300 pounds – is just the start of an effort by Rand O’Donnell to raise $1 million worth of pennies – 100 million pennies – to help needy families in Mount Vernon.

The credit union member, who already raised more than $4,000 for the “Mountain of Hope” fund, hopes the fund will generate enough interest income to provide a steady source of revenue for the Skagit County Community Action Agency, which helps families with emergency food, fuel and clothing.
