Shannon Layton, 32, walked into a police station in December and confessed to the embezzlement because she said she was overcome with remorse, according to police. She said she stole the money from a vault between 2002 and August 2009 and altered the cash count and other records to conceal the theft.

She pleaded guilty in December to making false entries by a credit union employee.
