Meriwest CU Gets FHLB Grants For Economic Assistance

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco yesterday awarded Meriwest CU $45,000 in AHEAD grants – for Access to Housing and Economic Assistance for Development – to help support local community development and housing programs.

The Meriwest grants will go to help finance two financial education programs that help needy San Jose residents learn to manage their finances and avoid predatory lenders.

Sacred Heart Community Service’s Asset Building for Independence, which helps needy families in searching for jobs, applying for various county and state benefit programs, and teaches them to manage income and create wealth building assets through savings and smart use of credit, received $25,000.

And Catholic Charities’ “Asset Building Continuum,” which helps low income families access free personal tax preparation as well as provide financial education and an Individual Development Account matched savings program, was awarded $20,000.
