Mich. State Regulators Shut Bogus CU Website

LANSING, Mich.-Michigan's state regulator, the Office of Insurance and Financial Regulation, last week was working to shut down a bogus credit union website. The site, at www.communalcreditunion.com, purported to be that of a Dearborn-based Communal Credit Union, although the address listed does not exist. The site, which included "testimonials" from "members," urged consumers to refinance loans and home mortgages. Two consumers who alerted the regulator to the bogus site said they had been asked to provide financial information, including pay stubs, Social Security Numbers and more.
