BOSTON - (07/29/04) More than 65 Michigan delegatesto the Democratic National Convention got their fuses lit for theday by credit union lobbyists during a pep rally/breakfast at theSheraton Hotel. Patrick LaPine, chief lobbyist for the Michigan CULeague, reminded the delegates of the work many have done with andon behalf of credit unions, including this years passage ofthe credit union reform bill. Democratically controlledcredit unions sync up really well with the Democratic Party,LaPine told the delegates. CUNA lobbyist Gary Kohn told the groupof the work credit unions do fwith nonprofits like theChildrens Miracle Network, the National Endowment forFinancial Education (NEFE), and the National ChildrensIdentification Program. After their remarks, the two credit unionslobbyists met privately with Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, whotold them she hopes the credit unions will work with heradministration on agenda issues like expanding financial servicesto low-income communities, financing affordable housing, andcombating predatory lending.
