LAKELAND, Fla. – Longtime history teacher Danny Whittenton last week was rewarded for his love of the classroom with a 2008 Toyota Prius, courtesy of MidFlorida FCU, when he was honored as Polk County’s 2008 Teacher of the Year.

Whittenton, who returned to Kathleen High School in May after retiring, also received a $1,000 check and a commemorative ring.
Whittenton has taught history for 38 years in Polk County and often dresses up as historical figures, such as George Washington, Davy Crockett and Abraham Lincoln, to teach classes.
