PORTLAND, Ore. - (06/10/05) -- A National Guardsman returning froma long tour of duty in Iraq was greeted with a rude surprise--hismother had apparently stolen his identity to drain more than$10,000 from his account at Northwest Community CU. Surveillancecameras at the credit union show the mother, identified as51-year-old Eleanor Alloway, repeatedly withdrawing money fromtheir ATMs using her son's ATM card. Police believe her son's ATMcard came in the mail while he was in Iraq with the 162ndBattalion. The soldier's name was not released, at his request.Alloway, who has been charged with aggravated theft, identity theftand fraudulent use of a credit card, told police she used the moneyfor video poker and for personal purchases, including electronicgames, medical expenses and daily living expenses.
