Mortgage Kingpin Reaps the Rewards of Fading Boom

CALABASAS, Calif. – Angelo Mozilo, the co-founder and CEO of mortgage banking giant Countrywide Financial, is headed for a year that will succeed his 2005, when he took home more than $150 million. The 71-year-old Mozilo earned $1.7 million Wednesday when he exercised 70,000 options for $9.60 each, then sold the shares for $33.33, giving the mortgage kingpin more than $45 million in net gain on the exercise of options so far this year, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Along with $9.65 million in restricted shares Mozilo received last month and over $4 million in salary, Mozilo is well on his way to topping the $85 million he received last year, and the $150 million he earned in 2005.
